Unlock Your High Notes!

Writer: Amber PeairsAmber Peairs

Have you ever felt frustrated when your voice just won’t cooperate during worship? 😩

Maybe you feel like you’re pushing and reaching, but the high notes still don’t come out right? Don’t worry—you’re not alone!

The good news is, singing higher notes doesn’t have to be a struggle!!

Here are 5 pro vocal tips to help you sing higher with ease:

🎵 Use Your Mix Voice

Instead of pushing up chest voice (which leads to strain) or flipping to a head voice (which lacks power), engage the forward pharyngeal placement along with an open mouth to create a strong yet effortless chest mix. Here's a quick video I made to demonstrate!

🗣 Modify The Vowels Around Your Break

Certain vowels can make high notes harder to sing especially as you move over your break. For guys, the first break is around an F4 or F#4 and the first female break is around an Ab4 or A4.

Try narrowing your vowels slightly as you approach the break—think "British Accent". Example: Instead of “ME” modify to “MEH” or "LORD" to "LAHD" for an easier, more open sound!

🔥 Use a Relaxed Vocal Fry

If you feel tension when singing high, start the phrase or note with a gentle vocal fry (that low, creaky sound) to help relax your cords and provide a grip into a mix. It’s a sneaky trick that works wonders!

🎤 Replace Lyrics with “NUH” While Practicing

This one is a game-changer! Try singing your melody on “NUH” instead of the lyrics. The “NUH” sound helps keep your placement forward and prevents tension. Once it feels easy, go back to the real words, but keep the same mouth shape and placement!

🧠 Think Down When You Sing Up

Here’s a weird but effective mind trick: When reaching for a high note, mentally think of it as “going down” rather than up. This keeps your larynx stable and prevents unnecessary tension!

Many times we can overthink and stress about the upcoming note. This tip helps distract the mind away from that. You can also bend your knees slightly.
