Struggling with Harmony?

Are you a vocalist that struggles with harmony? Maybe you just can't hear the part you are suppose to be singing or you tend to abandon the harmony once you hear the lead melody. You are NOT ALONE!!

Some people believe that you are born to hear harmony or you're not, but that is just not true. Yes, some people naturally have an ear to pick out harmony more easily than others, but if that's not you....THERE IS HOPE!

Harmony is a skill you CAN learn, but it takes work and effort to get there. You will need to be patient and realize that it's a journey.

WHAT IS HARMONY?

HARMONY: A combination of notes played or sung that have pleasing effect to the ear

The key word there is "pleasing". So part of learning harmony is being able to train your ear to hear notes that work together instead of ones that clash.

Here are a few things you can do to be more confident when it comes to harmony.

  • Understand basic music theory: Learn basic chord structures in different keys and how to build a chord on the piano.

  • Learn intervals: Train your ear to hear the distance between two notes (check out some number exercises to help you with ear training here)

  • If the harmony part provided is isolated, practice that over and over by committing it to muscle memory (just like you learned the lead melody part) muscle memory and train ear on that part

  • Record yourself singing melody and then record yourself singing the harmony with the melody you already recorded.

  • There are some great trainings online to learn harmony as well. Find one that resonates (no pun intended) with YOU!

YOU GOT THIS!!! Again...be patient with yourself and enjoy the journey!

Happy Singing,
